Paper Burn Test

paperBurnTest from Doug Holder on Vimeo.

This is a test of a burning piece of paper sim. The idea was to create the effect of how paper changes to that burned charred version after the flame consumes it. This is just a rough test of an idea on how to achieve this. In a more refined version I would create some specific textures and control the sim of the paper a little bit better.

Fire and Smoke

Add Smoke to Fire from Doug Holder on Vimeo.

This is a mini example of how I go about adding smoke to a fire sim, or rather pulling smoke out of a sim that already has the elements of smoke in it you just can't see it yet. Anyway, if you are looking for something that shows you how to make a fire sim.....you wont find it here. This is just how I like to add some quick smoke elements to my fire sims if the need should arise.

Fracture Contest

There is a contest going on in the Fracture beta forums. Basically the goal is to create a production finished shot using fracture. My original concept was grand and I had to reduce it to this. In the shot an explosion goes off blowing out the side of the building. Aside from the Fracture there are some other things going on in the shot. There is the initial explosion from the fractured geometry. The there is a nParticles sim of smaller debris flying out. Along with an additional nParticle sim of some dust flying out. A fluid sim for the explosion and the firs in the window is live footage of fire on a plane in the shot. It was just easier to track that way since I already had the track in Maya. This is the final comp result.

D.U.Die

This is one of the latest ones I have done. By ones I am referring to 1000 ways to die. In this shot the guy is drunk and pukes out the window and his head hits a mailbox decapitating him. No I know this is absurd but I just do what I'm told. In this shot I did the fluid sims, shaders (that I have been using for the whole show) and comping. One of the main issues I have with working on television projects is that there just isn't enough time to do the things you want. There are several things I would have fixed in this shot but could not in the time allotted. In any case, try to enjoy

Orb Effect

This is an effect I have created for a friends animation. In the animation the character is entranced by this orb that has this going on inside it. Just some Maya fluids and nParticles because the collisions for nParticles is so great.
